How do I enable 2FA? (Two-Factor Authentication)

I'm sure you've all heard by now the need for Two-Factor Authentication, but as a refresher 2FA:

  • Reduces the likelihood of your account being compromised by over 90%

  • Is now mandatory for all staff to maintain PACE insurance compliance.

  • Takes about 90 seconds to set up.

There are multiple forms of 2FA. We highly recommend just doing "Phone Number"and getting a text message. It's the most convenient, you might get 3 or 4 texts a year, your phone number isn't used for advertising, it's not sold to anyone, the tech department can't see anything you're doing on your phone, and Google doesn't get any additional access to your phone.

Here are the steps to enable 2FA:

1) From GMail or Google Drive, click your little profile icon in the top-right and click "Manage your Google Account"

2) On the left-hand side click "Security", then scroll down and click on "2-Step Verification"
3) Enter your password to confirm, then click "Next"
4) Click "Add a phone number"
5) Click "Add phone number" again
6) Enter your cell phone number, and click "Save", then click "Done"

Notes:

  • As always, if you cannot access your account for any reason (including forgetting your phone at home, etc.) contact the Tech Dept: (Internal# 1705 | External# (541)929-8768 | TechHelp@Philomath.k12.or.us)

  • After you enter your username and password, Google will send a text message to your phone with a six-digit code. You will then enter the code in order to log into your account.

  • Google will never use this number to send you anything other than login-related messages for your account.

  • After entering a 2FA code, if you are on a trusted device, you may check the Don't ask again on this device box. (See image below.) You shouldn't have to enter a code again on that same device for around two weeks unless Google detects a significant change. Logging into a new device, the same device on a different network (like at home), or logging in for the first time in a long while will likely require another 2FA code.
