Youtube is restricted heavily for younger students, and more lightly for older students.
Staff have no Youtube restrictions.
Teachers, Admin, and Counselors have the ability to see whether or not a video is blocked for students, and unblock it.
If you are a member of one of the groups allowed to approve videos, simply navigate to a Youtube video and look near the bottom.
We can see "Video not approved for philomath.k12.or.us".
This does NOT mean that no one at Philomath can watch the video.
It means that Youtube decides whether the video is blocked or not, based on how old the student is.
On the right, we see an "Approve" button. If we press this button, the video will be unblocked for all of Philomath.
We may have to refresh the page, but we should then see this at the bottom:
Now the video is watchable for anyone, of any age within Philomath, IF they have a link to the video.
If the video was blocked before, they will not see it if they search Youtube for it.
Key Points:
- There is generally no need to approve videos manually, UNLESS your students are having issues viewing that video. Youtube does a pretty good job figuring this out automatically.
- There is generally no need to approve videos embedded into Google Classroom. Those videos are automatically allowed to be viewed by students in the class.
-----IF YOUR VIDEO IS EMBEDDED-----
meaning it shows up on another website
that isn't Youtube, you'll have to take an additional step. Here's an
example of an embedded video:Even though this is a Youtube video, the website I am on is not Youtube, as you can see in the top right. The website I am on is khanacademy.org
This is more what we want to see; The same video, directly on Youtube.com, so that we can allow the video:
How do we get there? We have a few options, and this can be tricky at times.
Often, if the video is paused, this "Watch on Youtube" button will appear near the bottom left. Simply click it to be brought to the video on Youtube:
If that button is missing, try Right-clicking on the video, and choosing "Copy video URL"
Now up at the top of the browser, open a new tab by clicking the New Tab button, then paste the URL (Right Click -> Paste, or Ctrl+V) and hit enter.
From here you should have access to the bar at the bottom to unblock the video.
